Dinosaur Room Decor: Bedding, Lamps, Rugs and Wall Decals

Dinosaur room decor works best in removable layers: a comforter or duvet cover, a rug, a lamp and peel-off wall decals. Match each piece to the child’s age. Babies under 1 need a bare crib with no blankets or plush, so put the dinosaurs on the walls, and anchor dressers and choose cordless blinds in any child’s room.

What to check before you buy dinosaur room decor

A themed room is mostly textiles and lights, and the rules change with age. Before you buy, check four things:

1. Who sleeps there. A crib, a toddler bed and a big-kid bed each need different bedding.
2. The bed size on the label. Match the listing’s size to the mattress, not to the photo.
3. Power and batteries. Lamps need a testing-lab certification mark; small remotes and lights may use coin cells.
4. The walls. Removable decals suit rentals and let the theme grow up with your child.

Dinosaur bedding: which age can have what?

Babies up to 12 months

Keep dinosaur bedding out of the crib. The AAP’s safe sleep advice covers babies up to 1 year old and says the crib should hold no pillows, pillow-like toys, quilts, comforters, blankets, toys or bumper pads. CPSC puts it as “bare is best”: a firm, flat surface with only a fitted sheet.

For warmth, the AAP suggests layers of clothing or a wearable blanket instead of a loose blanket. The eBay listings on this page exclude crib, baby and bumper items for this reason.

Toddlers moving to a bed

The switch to a toddler or twin bed is a natural moment for a dinosaur comforter set. It makes a good birthday or Christmas present for a child who is proud of the new bed. Kids 6 to 12

Some older kids prefer a realistic look to cartoon prints. Skeleton or field-guide style duvet covers, a fossil-print throw and a “dig site” rug fit a young paleontologist who has outgrown bright green T. rex faces.

Dinosaur lamps and night-lights

Lamps are the one piece of room decor that plugs in, so check the label. OSHA recognizes private testing laboratories (NRTLs) that certify products against safety standards. Their registered mark on a product shows it was tested and certified to one or more safety test standards.

Many novelty lights run on batteries instead. If a lamp, light-up figure or remote control uses button or coin cells, Reese’s Law applies. CPSC guidance says products made or imported after March 19, 2024 must secure those battery compartments so they need a tool or two independent, simultaneous hand movements to open. Check that the battery door on a secondhand or older light closes firmly.

Dinosaur rugs and wall decals

A rug and a set of wall decals change a room fastest. They are also easy to remove when a child’s interests move on.

For decals, think about scale. The Natural History Museum lists Tyrannosaurus at about 12 meters long and Triceratops at 9 meters, far longer than any bedroom wall. A “life-size” footprint or skull decal gives a sense of that size without a mural.

Put small, peel-off decals above toddler reach. CPSC bans small parts in products meant for children under 3, and a decal peeled into pieces can end up in a mouth. Rugs on hard floors do better with a non-slip pad underneath.

Room safety checks that go beyond the theme

Two checks matter in any child’s room, dinosaur-themed or not:

• Anchor the dresser. CPSC advises anchoring dressers and other furniture securely to the wall. Clothing storage units made after September 1, 2023 must meet the mandatory tip-over standard adopted under the STURDY Act, which tests stability on carpet and with loaded, open drawers.
• Go cordless on blinds. A revised standard for window coverings took effect on December 15, 2018. It requires stock window coverings to be cordless or to have inaccessible cords or cords of eight inches or less. CPSC urges families with young children to switch to cordless products and to move cribs and beds away from windows.

Watch magnets too. Magnetic toys fall under the ASTM F963 toy standard, which CPSC enforces through 16 CFR part 1250. Other magnet products sold for entertainment or stress relief fall under CPSC’s magnet rule, which limits the strength of any loose magnet small enough to fit in the small parts cylinder. Keep loose magnets from fridge sets or desk toys away from young children.

Dinosaur decor for adult fans
