Kids’ dinosaur pajamas come in two safe types under CPSC rules: snug-fitting cotton sets with a yellow “Wear snug-fitting” tag, and looser sets made of flame-resistant fabric. Matching family dinosaur pajamas, often sold for Christmas, add adult and baby sizes in the same print. Buy the child’s true size, never a loose cotton tee for bed.

Dinosaur pajamas and the CPSC sleepwear rules

Dinosaur pajamas sold as children’s sleepwear in sizes above 9 months must be either flame resistant or snug-fitting, according to the CPSC. The rules sit in two federal standards: 16 CFR part 1615 for sizes 0 through 6X and part 1616 for sizes 7 through 14. Infants in sizes 9 months and under are treated differently, because the CPSC says they are not mobile enough to reach an open flame.

Pajama type How it meets the rule What the label shows
Snug-fit cotton or cotton blend Fits close to the body, leaving little air to feed a fire Yellow hangtag and a “Wear snug-fitting. Not flame resistant.” neck label
Loose-fit flame-resistant fabric, such as inherently flame-resistant polyester The garment does not keep burning once taken away from a flame Sold as sleepwear, often labeled flame resistant
Baby sizes 9 months and under Infant garment exemption, with length limits and a months-of-age size label Size in months, such as “0 to 3 mos.”
Daywear (T-shirts, sweats) Not made to the sleepwear rules No sleepwear labeling

The CPSC has warned shoppers that loose cotton T-shirts and similar garments catch fire easily and burn rapidly, and that burns often happen when children dressed for bed play near matches, lighters, candles or stove burners just before bedtime or after waking.

How to choose dinosaur pajamas for kids

Kids’ dinosaur pajamas should match the child’s current size, the season and how they sleep. A long-sleeve two-piece set suits winter and a short set suits summer, and both are sold in snug-fit cotton.

  1. Check the hangtag before you buy. A snug-fit set carries the yellow tag, and a loose set should say it is sleepwear.
  2. Buy the size on the chart, not two sizes up. Snug-fit pajamas only meet the rule when they fit snugly, so a big set loses the point of the design.
  3. Read the fabric line. Cotton and cotton blends must be snug. Loose fleece or polyester sets rely on the fabric passing the flame test.
  4. Look at the trim. Appliqué dinosaur spikes, hoods and tails are fun on a costume, but flat prints sit closer to the body for sleep.

Safety

A dinosaur T-shirt from the drawer is daywear, not sleepwear. The CPSC advises against putting children to sleep in T-shirts, sweats or other oversized, loose-fitting cotton or cotton-blend garments.

Matching family dinosaur pajamas for Christmas

Matching family dinosaur pajamas put the same T. rex or Stegosaurus print in baby, kids’ and adult sizes, so the whole family can wear one theme on Christmas morning. A matching set also makes the holiday photos look planned.

Each size in a family set follows its own rules. The kids’ pieces should be snug-fit or flame resistant, the baby pieces fall under the infant rules, and adult pajamas sit outside the children’s sleepwear standards, which run from size 0 to 14. Order every size at the same time from the same seller, so the print and color match across the family.

Dinosaur onesies, hooded sets and tails

Dinosaur onesies with a hood, spikes and a tail are often sold as costumes, loungewear or adult “kigurumi” style one-pieces. A loose one-piece sold as a costume may not be made to the children’s sleepwear rules, even if it looks like pajamas. For bedtime, choose a set sold as sleepwear and check that it is snug-fitting or labeled flame resistant.

Costume-style suits are covered in our dinosaur costumes guide, which has its own fabric and fire tips for Halloween.

Dinosaur pajamas for toddlers and babies

Toddler dinosaur pajamas from 12 months up follow the same snug-fit or flame-resistant rule as older kids’ sizes. Baby pajamas in sizes 9 months and under can be exempt from the sleepwear flammability test, but only if they meet the infant garment definition in 16 CFR 1615.1: sized 9 months or smaller, within set length limits, and labeled with the size in months. The CPSC says garments that miss those conditions must be tested to the full sleepwear rule.

Footed sleepers with dinosaur prints are a common baby gift. Pair them with something for the room rather than the crib: our dinosaur gifts for toddlers guide covers safe-sleep rules for plush, and the dinosaur plush page explains why soft toys stay out of the crib in the first year.

Dinosaur pajamas as a gift

Dinosaur pajamas make an easy add-on to a bigger present, or a Christmas Eve gift to open early. Pair a set with grippy dinosaur slippers, a dim dinosaur night light or dinosaur bedding from our room decor guide, or find the main gift in dinosaur gifts for kids. Frequently asked questions

Are cotton dinosaur pajamas safe for kids?

Yes, when they fit snugly. CPSC rules let cotton pajamas above size 9 months skip flame-resistant treatment only if they are made to fit close to the body, and they carry a yellow hangtag and a "Wear snug-fitting. Not flame resistant." neck label.

Can my child sleep in a dinosaur T-shirt?

The CPSC advises against it. Loose cotton T-shirts, sweats and oversized garments stand away from the body, catch fire more easily and burn faster than snug pajamas, so save the big dinosaur tee for daytime.

Should I size up in snug-fit dinosaur pajamas?

Not by much. Snug-fit pajamas are safe because they sit close to the body, so a set bought several sizes too big loses that protection. Buy the child's current size from the maker's chart.

Do baby dinosaur pajamas follow the same rules?

Not all of them. Garments sized 9 months or smaller that meet the infant garment definition, including length limits and a months-of-age size label, are exempt from the children's sleepwear flammability test.

Are dinosaur onesies with hoods and tails sleepwear?

Check the label. A loose, hooded dinosaur onesie sold as a costume or loungewear may not be made to the children's sleepwear rules, so for bedtime pick a set sold as sleepwear that is snug-fitting or labeled flame resistant.
