What should I look for in a dinosaur plush?

A plush looks simple, but the label tells you most of what matters:

1. Age grade. A tag reading “suitable from birth” or “0+” means the maker designed it for babies. A 3+ label means it may have parts that are not safe for younger children.
2. Eyes and trim. Embroidered eyes have no hard parts to come loose. Hard eyes are fine when the maker labels the toy for that age.
3. Size. A plush the size of the child is fun to hug but awkward to carry. Mid sizes around 12 inches travel well.
4. Washability. Check the care label. Some plush is surface wash only.
5. Batteries and weights. Sound, light and weighted plush need extra checks (see below).

The CPSC bans small parts in toys intended for children under 3. It counts pieces that break off during use and abuse testing, which is why seams and eyes matter on baby plush. Toys with small parts meant for ages 3 to under 6 must carry a choking hazard warning under 16 CFR 1500.19.

Can babies have dinosaur plush in the crib?

No, not in the first year. The American Academy of Pediatrics says soft objects and loose bedding can increase a baby’s risk of entrapment, suffocation or strangulation. Its list includes pillows and pillow-like toys, quilts, comforters, blankets, toys and bumper pads. These recommendations apply to babies up to 1 year of age.

Which dinosaur plush brands are worth knowing?

Jellycat

Jellycat is a British plush toy company. Its Bashful Dino in Medium is about 12.2 by 4.7 by 3.5 inches, with a 9-inch sitting height, according to the retailer Pacifier Kids. The listing gives a polyester outer with polyester fiber and PE bean filling. It says the toy is suitable from birth and tested to EN71, ASTM and ISO 8124 standards.

Jellycat makes the same design in more than one size, so check the size name in the listing.

Squishmallows

Squishmallows are round, squashy plush made by Jazwares. The official Squishmallows store lists sizes of 3.5, 5, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16, 20 and 24 inches. It groups characters into squads, including a Prehistoric Squad of dinosaurs.

Small sizes make easy stocking stuffers or party favors. The big sizes work as a floor cushion for a school-age fan.

Jurassic World plush

Mattel’s licensing deal with Universal, renewed in March 2024, covers Jurassic World plush along with figures and playsets. A licensed plush suits a movie fan who already collects the figures.

Are weighted dinosaur stuffed animals safe?

Weighted plush has a filling of beads or pellets that makes it heavier than a normal stuffed toy. They suit older children who like a heavier toy to hold.

For babies, the answer is no. The AAP advises against weighted objects on or near a baby. For older children, follow the maker’s age grade and weight guidance. Check that seams are closed so the fill cannot leak, since loose beads are small parts.

What about plush that roars or lights up?

Sound and light plush often runs on button or coin cells. Reese’s Law (16 CFR part 1263) requires compartments for these batteries to need a tool or two independent, simultaneous hand movements to open. A screw-closed pouch inside the plush is what to look for.

Magnets are uncommon in plush, but check the description if a design has parts that snap together. Toys fall under the mandatory toy standard, ASTM F963 (16 CFR part 1250), which CPSC magnet guidance cites for magnet limits in toys. Skip unbranded plush with loose magnets.
