Dinosaur blankets compared: hooded wearable styles, fleece and plush throws, which ages can use them, and what to know before buying a weighted blanket.

The best dinosaur blanket depends on where it will be used. Choose a hooded blanket for couch time and dress-up, a light fleece throw for naps and travel, and a thicker plush or sherpa for cold rooms. Keep loose blankets out of a baby’s crib: the AAP’s guidance runs through the first year.

Hooded, fleece or plush dinosaur blanket?

Dinosaur blankets fall into three main styles, and the difference is how a child ends up using them.

Style What it is Works best for
Hooded A wearable throw with a dinosaur head on the hood and often a tail Couch time, pretend play, movie nights
Fleece throw A flat printed blanket, usually lightweight Naps, travel, packing for a sleepover
Plush or sherpa A thicker blanket with a soft pile on one or both sides Cold rooms, reading corners, a bigger gift

Check the listed width and length before you buy. A throw sized for a small child can feel short on a tall 10-year-old, and sizes vary between makers.

Hooded dinosaur blankets as a gift

Hooded dinosaur blankets work as a gift because they do double duty. A child gets something warm and a costume at the same time, and many of them come with spikes along the back or a soft tail.

Treat a hooded blanket as a daytime layer. A hood and a long drape can shift around a sleeping child, so an ordinary blanket or a pair of dinosaur pajamas makes more sense at bedtime.

Take it off before a car ride too. The AAP says bulky clothing should not be worn under a car seat harness, and that a blanket can go over the top of the buckled straps.

Children who like to dress up may want the real thing as well. Our dinosaur costumes guide covers inflatable suits and simpler outfits, which suit Halloween and parties better than a blanket does.

What age can use a dinosaur blanket?

A dinosaur blanket is a gift for a child past babyhood. The AAP’s safe sleep advice covers babies up to 1 year old and says the crib should hold no quilts, comforters, blankets, pillows, bumpers or toys. Its suggestion for warmth is layers of clothing or a wearable blanket, which is a sleep sack with a zip rather than a hooded throw.

The advice stops at age 1, but it doesn’t say a blanket becomes safe that day. Treat the first birthday as the earliest point to ask your pediatrician. Then keep the first blanket light and a size that doesn’t drag on the floor.

Safety

Babies under 12 months should not sleep with a loose dinosaur blanket, however soft. If one arrives as a gift, put it away for later.

Are weighted dinosaur blankets safe for kids?

Weighted dinosaur blankets are a medical question more than a gift question, so ask your child’s doctor first. In December 2022, the CPSC and Target recalled about 204,000 Pillowfort weighted blankets after two girls, ages 4 and 6, died. NBC News reported the hazard: a child can unzip the blanket, get inside and become trapped.

The AAP also advises against weighted blankets, sleepers, swaddles or other weighted objects on or near a baby. If a doctor or therapist suggests a weighted blanket for an older child, follow their guidance on size and weight, and buy it for that purpose rather than as a themed gift.

Fleece or plush: fabric and washing

Many fleece and plush blankets are polyester, so the choice is mostly about warmth and how long they take to dry. Fleece is the thin, light option and is easy to throw in the wash after a spill. Plush and sherpa styles are thicker and warmer, and they hold more water in the machine.

Follow the care tag, and check the fabric line in the listing because photos can’t show the pile. If a listing mentions OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, that means an independent certification that the textile was tested for harmful substances, and it is worth checking which product class the certificate covers.

A printed flat throw is the easiest guess if you don’t know a child’s tastes. A hooded one has more personality, but some kids find a hood annoying after about a minute.

Dinosaur blanket gift ideas by moment

Dinosaur blankets are easy to wrap and hard to break, which helps at every gifting moment.

  • Christmas: a fleece throw rolled up with a plush dinosaur makes a soft bundle under the tree.
  • A new bed: pair a throw with dinosaur bedding for a child moving out of the crib.
  • Sleepovers: a light blanket packs into a dinosaur backpack with room to spare.

For the rest of the room, dinosaur room decor covers lamps, rugs and wall decals, and dinosaur gifts sorts every other present by age and interest.

Frequently asked questions

What age can have a dinosaur blanket?

Not a baby. The AAP's safe sleep advice for babies up to 1 year old rules out loose blankets, and it doesn't name a date when they become safe, so ask your pediatrician about the first one. After that, start with a light fleece throw. Hooded styles suit children old enough to take them off without help.

Are hooded dinosaur blankets safe to sleep in?

Treat them as couch and dress-up layers rather than nightwear. A hood and a long drape can move around a sleeping child, so an ordinary blanket or dinosaur pajamas make better choices for bedtime.

Should I buy a weighted dinosaur blanket?

Talk to your child's doctor first. About 204,000 Pillowfort weighted blankets sold at Target were recalled in December 2022 after two children died, and the AAP says weighted objects should not be used on or near a baby.

What is the difference between fleece and plush dinosaur blankets?

Fleece is thinner, lighter and easy to throw in the wash. Plush and sherpa styles feel thicker and warmer, so they suit colder rooms and take longer to dry.
