Life-Size Dinosaur Statues: How Big They Are and How They Ship

A life-size dinosaur statue is as long as the real animal: about 39 feet for Tyrannosaurus, which the Natural History Museum lists at 12 meters, but only about 6 feet for a 1.8-meter Velociraptor. Garden statues are usually scaled, so read the dimensions. Ask how a large piece ships, and inspect a freight crate before you sign.

How big a life-size dinosaur statue really is

A life-size dinosaur statue matches the animal’s real length, and most dinosaurs were long. The Natural History Museum in London gives these lengths in its Dino Directory. Feet are converted at about 3.28 feet per meter and rounded.

The museum lists Velociraptor at about 7 kilograms, against 7,000 kilograms for Tyrannosaurus.

Scaled garden dinosaur statues: what the sizes mean

A scaled garden dinosaur statue is smaller than the real animal by a set ratio. Design Toscano’s Triceratops Scaled statue, for example, is 40 inches long, 20.5 inches tall and 23 pounds, cast in designer resin with crushed stone and reinforced with fiberglass. A real Triceratops at 9 meters was about 354 inches long, so the statue is roughly one-ninth scale (40 divided by 354).

Some sellers call large statues “life-size” in a title. Read the dimensions on the product page and compare them with the table above before you trust the label.

Heads and skulls are a good middle ground. A skull replica shows the real scale of a jaw without a 30-foot body. Our dinosaur gifts for adults guide covers skull replicas and other display pieces.

How a large dinosaur statue ships by freight

A large dinosaur statue may ship by freight truck rather than parcel post, so ask the seller before you order:

1. Is delivery curbside, to the garage or into the yard?
2. Does the truck have a liftgate, or do you need people to unload it?
3. Will the carrier call to book a delivery window?
4. Is freight included in the price, or charged at checkout?
5. Does the listing ship at all, or is it local pickup only?

Design Toscano’s terms of use say delivery times are estimates and that title and risk of loss pass to the buyer once the products reach the carrier. That makes the inspection at your door the moment that counts.

Plan the route from the curb to the statue’s final spot. Measure gates and paths against the crate, and have two or more adults ready to lift.

How to winter a resin dinosaur statue outdoors

A resin dinosaur statue can stay outside year-round with care, according to Design Toscano’s winter care sheet. The sheet says resin and cast stone can withstand winter with proper care, and gives these steps:

• Cover or store statues with designs that hold water.
• Keep painted pieces, such as animal figures, in a covered area for winter.
• Lower a statue from its pedestal early in winter if it does not seem securely placed.
• In windy places, secure statues on terraces to permanent structures, and bring portable statues indoors in extreme freezing weather.

Check HOA rules before a front-yard dinosaur

A front-yard dinosaur can draw neighbors in a good way or a bad way. In August 2015, a homeowner in New Territory, a Fort Bend County subdivision in Texas, put metal T. rex and velociraptor sculptures in her front yard, and the homeowner told ABC13 she had been contacted and asked about her plans. Read your HOA covenants and ask your city about zoning before ordering something tall for the front lawn. A backyard spot avoids most of these questions.

Not every fan needs a garden-sized statue. Tabletop figures from our dinosaur toys guide suit a desk or shelf, and a 1,000-piece puzzle from dinosaur puzzles by age makes a framed alternative. Smaller presents for grown-up fans are on the dinosaur gifts hub.
