Dinosaur Egg Toy Guide: Which Hatch in Water and How Long It Takes

How a dinosaur egg toy hatches in water and how long it takes: the AMNH Hatch 'N Grow egg, dig eggs and Mattel Hidden Hatchers, with age labels.

A dinosaur egg toy that hatches in water is a capsule you submerge. The AMNH Shop’s Gigantic Hatch ’N Grow egg cracks open 12 to 24 hours later, then grows for a couple of days. Dig eggs open with a chisel; Mattel’s Hidden Hatchers transform by hand. The examples here are labeled 4 and up or 5 and up.

Three kinds of dinosaur egg toy compared

Dinosaur egg toys open in three different ways, and each suits a different kind of play. The table uses the maker or museum shop’s own figures.

Egg toy type How it opens How long it takes Example and age on the maker’s page
Grow egg (hatch in water) Shell breaks after soaking 12 to 24 hours to hatch, days to grow AMNH Shop Gigantic Hatch ’N Grow egg, ages 5+
Dig egg Child chips the shell with a tool One sitting or a few short ones See our dig kits guide
Transforming egg Folded open by hand Minutes, in 8 steps Mattel Jurassic World Hidden Hatchers, ages 4+

How a dinosaur egg hatches in water

A dinosaur egg that hatches in water is a capsule with a small figure inside that swells as it soaks. The American Museum of Natural History Shop gives these steps for its Gigantic Hatch ’N Grow Dinosaur Egg:

  1. Submerge the egg completely in a container of water.
  2. Wait 12 to 24 hours for the shell to break and the dinosaur to come out.
  3. Leave the dinosaur in the water, and it grows to full size in a couple of days.

Bigger eggs take longer. The same shop sells a 4.3-inch Green Stegosaurus Hatch N Grow egg whose dinosaur grows to full size over 14 days. That suits a child who likes checking on it every morning.

Use a container well larger than the egg, since the figure keeps growing after it hatches. Set it somewhere a younger sibling cannot reach. The AMNH Shop says the Stegosaurus egg is not completely safe for children under 3.

Why water beads need extra care

Water beads are a different water-absorbing toy: small, often colorful balls of super absorbent polymer. CPSC says they can grow up to 100 times their original size in water, which makes them dangerous if a child swallows one or puts one in an ear or nose.

A federal standard now covers water bead toys. CPSC says water beads made after March 12, 2026 must meet limits on how far they expand and on acrylamide, and must carry strongly worded warning labels. If you are unsure whether a grow toy counts, go by the age label on its box.

Safety

Keep loose water beads away from children under 3, and away from older children who still put things in their mouths. If a dinosaur kit includes water beads, check the box for the new warning label.

Dinosaur dig eggs you chip open

A dinosaur dig egg is a hard shell or brick with a small figure buried inside, and the fun is the excavation. Kids soak or brush the shell, then chip it away with a small tool. Dig eggs are messy, so work on a tray or outdoors and keep dust away from eyes.

Our dinosaur dig kits guide compares dig eggs with plaster skeleton blocks and real fossil kits, with the age printed on each maker’s box.

Transforming dinosaur eggs: Mattel Hidden Hatchers

Transforming dinosaur eggs open by hand, with no water or tools. Mattel’s Jurassic World Survival Instincts Hidden Hatchers change from an egg into a dinosaur figure in 8 steps. Mattel lists the 4-pack with a T. rex, an Indominus rex, a Tiger Atrociraptor and a Dilophosaurus, for ages 4 and up.

These eggs become ordinary figures after the reveal, so they suit kids who collect. More Mattel dinosaurs are in our Jurassic World toys guide.

Toy dinosaur eggs versus real fossil eggs

A dinosaur egg toy is a new toy, made to be opened. Real fossil eggs and eggshell raise different questions: where the fossil came from, whether it left its country legally and whether it has been restored. Our guide to buying real dinosaur fossils covers those checks.

Small grow eggs fit party bags and Easter baskets for school-age kids, as long as every guest is over 3. Our dinosaur party supplies guide has more favor ideas, and dinosaur gifts for kids 6 to 12 lists bigger presents. Start at dinosaur gifts by age and interest for everything else.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a dinosaur egg toy take to hatch in water?

The AMNH Shop says its Gigantic Hatch 'N Grow Dinosaur Egg breaks open 12 to 24 hours after you submerge it. Left in the water, the dinosaur grows to full size in a couple of days. Larger eggs take longer.

Are hatching dinosaur eggs safe for toddlers?

Most are not made for them. The AMNH Shop rates its Gigantic Hatch 'N Grow egg for ages 5 and up and says its Stegosaurus egg is not completely safe for children under 3. CPSC bans small parts in toys meant for children under 3.

Are grow-in-water dinosaur eggs the same as water beads?

They are different products. Water beads are small, loose balls of super absorbent polymer, and CPSC says they can grow up to 100 times their original size. The CPSC release does not say whether its water bead rule covers grow-in-water figures, so follow the age on the egg's box and keep it from children who mouth toys.

Are dinosaur egg toys the same as real fossil eggs?

No. Egg toys are new toys made to be opened. Real fossilized dinosaur eggs and eggshell are a separate purchase with legal and authenticity questions, covered in our guide to buying real dinosaur fossils.
